Why does a heel spur occur?

Is it painful to walk and stand? Do you have pain under the heel when you get up in the morning? It could be a heel spur, a bony growth on the heel bone that can cause pain.

The problem arises as a result of prolonged misload or overload on the heel bone.

When you walk, it's the heel that hits the ground first. The heel bone largely determines how body weight is balanced through the foot forward towards the toes. The fact is that many people have heel bones that roll too much inward. This causes an exaggerated inward rolling of the entire foot (overpronation), which in turn leads to misloads on the heel bone and can create a heel spur.

If you walk a lot on hard surfaces and/or wear the wrong shoes, the risk of inward rolling of the heel bone and overpronation is increased. This increases the chance of misloading the heel bone and the likelihood of developing a heel spur.

Shoes against heel spur

If you have already developed a heel spur, you should consider which shoes you use in everyday life. Shoes can reduce heel pain, but also make them worse.
Many soft running shoes can feel very comfortable at the point of purchase. However, the soft sole material tends to wear out in a short time and the sole changes shape. The "worn" sole can result in the foot being directed into incorrect positions, which provokes the foot's construction. Heel spur is a common consequence of such misalignments.
